Chocolate
You can never have enough chocolate during this extremely stressful time. I know that I pretty much quadruple my chocolate intake during SWOTVAC! My chocolate of choice? Cadbury Black Forest. It's so delicious. Last SWOTVAC period, I think I went through 5 blocks in a week. Hey, don't judge!
Buy new stationary
I find that when I've bought some new stationary, I get really excited about using it. And what better way than to write out some study notes? Buy stationary in different colours, so that you enjoy writing your notes. It's also beneficial to write notes in different colours as it assists in memory recall. Yesterday, I went to Officeworks and got some new coloured felt tip pens, new writing pens, and fluorescent highlighters. If you have time, pop into a kikki-k store, or online. I get so excited by all the pretty stationary, I literally spend hours lost in there.
I also have these coloured felt tip pens from kikki-k and they are amazing to use! |
Retail therapy
Find some motivation by doing some retail therapy, as I did here. This form of procrastination soothes the soul. I also pop onto net-a-porter a lot and put things I really want in my basket. But of course I can't afford it!! One day...
Music
I find studying to music is really helpful. Especially if it's slow, mellow, acoustic tunes, such as Ben Howard. 'Old Pine', 'Three Tree Town' and his cover of 'Call Me Maybe' are currently my favourites to study to. Definitely listen to some of his stuff if you haven't already. I usually procrastinate by making a mellow study playlist. Last SWOTVAC, it had a bit of Alt-J, Frank Ocean, Ben Howard, and even Rudimental. If you can't listen to songs containing lyrics while you study, give instrumental music a go. A friend introduced me to the Amelie soundtrack, and it works wonders. Classical music is also great.
Ben Howard: singer/songwriter who is phenomenal on the guitar...and easy on the eye |
Exercise
I find that whenever I get a little too stressed, going for a jog makes me feel infinitely better. This form of procrastination is good for your health, and actually makes you more productive as you get a surge of endorphins pumping through your system. And your body will thank you for it after you've eaten all that chocolate. Give it a go! And play some wicked tunes while you're at it!
REST
If your like me and have left everything you need to know for your exams up to the last minute, then you are most likely planning on not sleeping. Unfortunately, you'll probably end up crashing and burning by the time your exams come around. I had a friend that accidentally slept through our second year physiology exam. Whoops. Give yourself at least 7 hours sleep each night. And make sure at some point during the week, you reward yourself with a 9 hour sleep. Trust me, it'll work wonders. And, there has been extensive research that proves that sleep is important for cognitive function, especially with memory consolidation. So, the more sleep you get, the more likely you'll remember all those niggley little facts you'll need for your exam!!
Socialising
Locking yourself inside for a whole week can turn you mad. Whether it's a group study session, or a mid-week coffee, the human interaction will stop you from going crazy. Just this past weekend, I decided that I needed to give studying a break, so my best friend and I had a quiet night in with some spaghetti bolognese, red wine, and had a 'Sex and the City' marathon. If I wasn't able to learn anything to do with uni, at least I was going to learn some valuable life lessons.
Can always learn a thing or two from these girls |
General procrastination
I find doing anything other than what you are meant to be doing is just so much better. Tumblr, whatever. I actually decided I would start to reread the Harry Potter books again. Just finished Philosopher's Stone, and I'm now halfway through Chamber of Secrets.
